Mid-Week Challenge

The story headline reads: Scientists date and verify biblical tale in new study. I love seeing headlines like these in secular print because I know that those behind the story went to a great deal of trouble to disprove the evidence the scientist produced.  The latest proof comes from the scientists at the Hebrew University and Tel Aviv University.  How this is different is that these archeologists are not using a trowel and brush to uncover buried treasure, they are using readings of ancient geomagnetic fields to piece together historical events recorded in the Bible to see how closely they match those recounted in other works.

Professor Yoav Vaknin explains, "We are standing here at the gate house Lachish. In 701 (BCE) Sennacherib King of Assyria was here, put a siege on the city and eventually conquered the city and destroyed it. This is described also in the Bible and also in Assyrian sources and in the famous Lachish relief describing this event. And we managed to reconstruct the magnetic field of the earth which is recorded in burnt mud bricks like the one I'm holding here. As you can see over there - the burnt mud brick wall. When these mud bricks were burnt, they recorded they recorded the magnetic field of the earth at the time. This helped us, this was used as an anchor for dating other sites. We reconstructed the magnetic field also in other sites and we could use the magnetic signal to date sites that aren't well dated according to the data from this site which is very well dated to 701 BCE." https://www.yahoo.com/news/scientists-date-verify-biblical-tale-160845195.html

Sitting in a seminary calls in 1996, I remember my Old Testament professor recounting this same story, but he was using the writings from the Sennacherib stone as proof of the Biblical event.  Now scientists are using the Bible stories and the verified geomagnetic field of the Earth to date newly discover dig sites.  Science is now using the Bible, not the other way around.  Skeptics continue to want to find fault, but this is just another example of the trustworthiness of the Bible.

The stories we read in the Old and New Testaments actually happened. The people described actually walked the land and did the things we read about them doing.  If the location, people and historical events can be verified, why does there continue to be so much doubt?  For most people, if the Bible message were found to be true, it would mean an entire life transformation for them.  It’s one thing to locate a city, something else to adopt a belief system. Those that fight the hardest are fighting for their right to be accountable only to themselves. Darkness loves the dark and shuns the light.  Sadly, no one can ignore truth forever. Ephesians 5:13 tells us, “But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light.”

God loves us enough to give us clues along the way that explain His love and plan for us.  His grace and mercy continue all around us each day, but not forever.  Pray that God will open the eyes of those who doubt. Pray that God will use you to help connect someone to Him today!

Serving the Savior,

Bro. Jonathan
