Mid-Week Challenge

2022 is almost in the rearview mirror, no looking back, only forward.  Some people like to say that, but I think it is okay to sometimes look back, because it leads us to be thankful for what is ahead.  The Bible encourages us in this truth when we are told in Lamentations 3:22-23 - Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Think about that for a second. His mercies are new every morning. It’s not like God has a limited store of grace and mercy to give you, and each day you deplete that store a bit more.  As we look back on 2022 you might have felt depleted at times, but rest assured that 2023 promises a restoration of blessings and opportunities.  God’s mercies are not only new in the new year, they are new each day.  God’s mercies are new, fresh, and abundant each day. He has good things to give you today that are even better than yesterday.  God knows us so well that His blessings are tailored to what you will experience and struggle with today. 

Your hope for today, and the new year to come, is based not on karma or luck or the odds determined by people. Your hope for today is the promise that God’s mercies are new every morning. John Piper once wrote, “The world gets comfort from their odds. Not Christians. Some count their chariots (percentages of survival) and some count their horses (side effects of treatment), “but we trust in the name of the Lord our God” (Psalm 20:7)”.  David reminds us in Psalm 23:6 - “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”

Whatever the world tried to throw at you in the way of difficulties in 2022, today is a new day.  Tomorrow, even better! God has us in His hand, and His blessings are abundant.  As you “take inventory” of this past year, know that new and exciting things are ahead.  Make sure you share in the journey with loved ones around you.  Set out today to make it your goal in 2023 to have one of the best years of your life because God has allowed us to see His fresh mercies in a new day!!
